There are so many benefits to having a concrete patio; we know you will be pleased with your decision for years to come. By owning a concrete patio instead of a wood deck, you are saving trees. You will no longer need to apply wood stains and sealers to protect it from the weather, or pesticides to combat termites and carpenter ants. Nor will you need to use weed killers like you would if you laid paving stones. You will, however, need to periodically clean and seal your concrete patio.

Cleaning Your Concrete Patio

Clean your patio every few weeks to keep it looking great.

First sweep your patio with a broom to remove dirt and other loose matter. You may want to use a vacuum cleaner around doorframes.
Next, rinse your patio with water. A hose or pressure washer will do the job nicely.
Then, squeeze some liquid dish detergent onto the wet patio and clean the surface using a clean outdoor broom or scrub brush.
Next, rinse away all the detergent with your water hose.
Finally, dry the patio. You may want to first use a squeegee to remove excess water. Then, you can either leave it to air dry (allow at least 24 hours- slightly less if running a fan) or use a leaf blower.

Sealing Your Concrete Patio

You will need to reseal your concrete patio approximately every 2 or 3 years in order to keep the color vibrant and protect it from damage from dust and water.

Note: Apply the sealer when the air temperature is above 55 but below 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

First you will need to clean your patio as described above. Make sure your patio is COMPLETELY dry before applying sealer.
Next, add a jar of anti-skid material to a 5-gallon container of sealer. Stir thoroughly.
Then, use a long-handled 1" nap roller to distribute the mixture in small sections. Do not use a sprayer. Stir the mixture frequently as you are working and make sure you cover the entire surface of the patio. Also, be sure to remove any insects or other debris that may get trapped in the sealer, before it dries.
Wait until the first coat is completely dry, with no stickiness (about 4 hours) before applying the next coat.

A note about safety:
Be careful when walking across your wet patio, as surfaces can be slippery. Also be sure to observe the safety precautions on product packages.
